The Kagyu Shedrupling Monastery was named by His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, the 37th throne holder of Drikung Kagyu Lineage. The name depicts that it’s the place under the Kagyu lineage, for Buddhist academic studies and monastic practices.
The Monastery was setup by Khenpo Thinley Dorji in 2020, with the objectives to provide opportunity for Buddhist education to children of low-income households in Bhutan, to spread and uphold the Teachings of Buddha and to restore the Drikung Kagyu lineage in Bhutan.
Khenpo Thinley Dorji was born on 23rd May 1986, in a village in Wangdu, Bhutan. His mother and father passed away when Khenpo Thinley was 8 and 10 years old respectively. He then decided to become a monk at the age of 10 and took his ordination vows in Punakha Dzong in front of the 70th Je Khenpo.
Khenpo Thinley received his primary monastic education in Dechen Phordang Monastery in Thimphu. In late 2000, at the age of 16, he joint Drikung Kagyu Jangchub Ling Institute in Dehra Dun, India and completed his archarya studies in 2011.
Upon completing his archarya studies in 2011, Khenpo Thinley served at Jangchub Ling Institute as a teacher, disciplinary master and chant master. He returned to Bhutan in 2014 and taught Buddhist philosophy and Tibetan grammar in Ogyen Dorje Institute.
In 2017, he completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Education course at Paro College of Education, Royal University of Bhutan. And in 2020, he went on to setup Kagyu Shedrupling Institute.
The Institute is currently located in a rented premise, housing about 30 young monks. We are unable to take in more children due to space constraint.
With great blessing, we have raised sufficient fund and had acquired a plot of land in Paro, which has a direct view of Tiger Nest.
We are now raising fund for the construction of our new building.
The new building will have the capacity to house 80 monks. It will comprise of 20 rooms, 4 classrooms, a library, a kitchen and a dining hall. We are now doing the fundraising for construction of the new premise and will like to appeal to all, for donation towards this meritorious project.
Your support and contributions will create opportunities for more children to receive the monastic education and enable Buddha Dharma to flourish.
